Dont use the cortex calculator,I used this and the spokes were 2mm short, thats £30 worth of spokes that cant be returned,I used this calculator and it worked for me http://www.wheelpro.co.uk/spokecalc/ also try this website for wheelbuilding tips http://sheldonbrown.com/wheelbuild.html there are loads of different techniques for wheel building,I found once I got the right length spokes, screw the nipples on till a couple of threads still show and then tighten them half a turn each till you get the right tension,if you are lucky they will only need minimal truing,if the spokes come out the end they are too long and you wont get the tension,if they are too short threads will still be showing when under full tension,if this happens the spokes will not be threaded in enough and could pull out of the nipples, the spokes should just be visible in the slot of the nipple.
Honestly once the spoke length is overcome the wheelbuilding is easy take it slow and it will all come together, hand built wheels are the best but even better if built using your own hands. :D
