Tyre pressure question

Postby gone4ahoon » 12 Jun 2015, 15:24

I'm looking for a bit of info regarding tyre pressure for my lads Mini. Is it a try it and see kind of thing or do I use manufacturers recommendations 85-100psi? I currently have 60psi in the tyres thinking there's a bit of give in the tyres. This is his first season racing so we're learning a bit each meeting we go to, hopefully going in the right direction.
Cheers

to be honest 80psi is what i run in my lads 1 3/8 wheels.
while he's jumping and stuff a bit too soft could lead to damaged walls of the rim, i don't mind a tire or tube popping..

my own and daughters bike run 80psi also..
some folks run over 100psi others less..

up the pressure see if he notices any improvement, it should roll better with less resistance and tire roll,
and tell him more air makes him lighter too :)

Thanks for that bigpimp. My lads got a couple of races this weekend so I'll give it a go and see how he gets on. Might mention the more air makes him lighter part as well. :D

Current race tyres are light and have fairly thin sidewalls. They usually need the stated pressure to support the tyre and keep it's shape properly.

I've ran loads of different pressures right up to 130psi but that was way to much...

manufactures guidelines are good to stick by

only the other day at a regional meeting we were chatting about tire pressure,
i run 80psi in my powerblocks, says 65 on the side.
my mate runs 100psi in his, and another has around 80 to 90 in maxis DTH..

so it's down to how they feel to you under race conditions,
harder they are less roll they have and seem to be a lot more responsive,

Work with guidelines. As its his first season, It might be worth trying max pressure on the back to improve acceleration and then running close to min recommended pressure on the front to give a bit more forgiveness/grip/confidence in the corners.
No matter how much it hurts, its still better than shopping!
