Gearing for a mini

Postby gone4ahoon » 03 May 2015, 21:06

Can anyone recommend a gearing for my 6 year old ? He's riding novice at the moment but has done quite well at local tracks with 36/16, but today he seemed to struggle at a new track. I don't know if it was the new track or the gearing was wrong for that track or just wrong in general.

a lot of tracks are different,
35/16 is a quicker gear out the gate and smaller berms, but at speed he will be peddling a lot more,
37/17 is harder out the gate until he builds up speed, if he's quick out the berms the less effort on the pedals may help him gain more but if he has to go up and down big rollers, steps up and such then he'll struggle..

it's a very technical subject gearing and one you can only work out your self..
if it's the above, bigger doubles and steps ups then a 35/16 will help, he should be quicker out the gate and help up the hills..

but also not only the gears but the pedal arm length too can have an effect on riding,
i suspect he has a 145mm or 150mm pedal arm ??

again shorter arms can make you pedal quicker, longer give you more leverage or power out the berms, but can slow the gate down..

it took me a year to finally find my own bike is suited to 44/16 with 175mm cranks..

Thanks bigpimp, I was looking at the gearing chart for 1"1/8 wheels and the rollout is 45 with what he's got now at 36/16. If I went to 36/17 at 42.3 or 18 at 40 then I presume it's as you say, he'll pedal more but be better on the step ups where he seems to struggle most. He's using 140mm cranks at the moment, is this about right would you think or would he need to go longer? He's average height for his age at 3 foot 9.

Sorry forgot to say his inside leg to ankle is 17" and to the floor is 19.5". I had a look at the crank selection chart but was unsure about the inseam part  .
